Chapter One:
In Chapter One, the story starts out with vague voices of characters yet to be introduced. They talked about removing the “monitor” from Andrew Ender’s neck to save the world. It is stated that his brother and sister went through the same monitor removal that he (Ender) is experiencing right now. As the doctor remove the monitor, it was supposed to be a painless process, Ender reacted violently to the displacement of it. Afterwards, Ender returned to school where he was teased and bullied relentlessly because his monitor was now gone. He was called a “Third” which meant that he was the third child of the family, it was a term used to insult someone. When class was dismissed, Ender came face to face with Stilson and a group of boys who had stayed behind to mess with him. In response to the situation and the stress he felt from having his monitor removed, Ender strike Stilson to stop his harassment. He then proceeds to beat Stilson up in a defensive manner. When he was done, he threatened the boys once more and thought to himself that he resembled his ill-temper brother without his monitor. He compared himself to Peter.
Chapter Two:
Once again, in Chapter two, the vague voices starts the chapter as Ender comes home from school. There, Valentine (his sister) and Peter (his brother) are introduced. Valentine felt sympathetic towards Ender’s loss and was consoling him when Peter entered into the room that they were in. Once Peter saw that Ender was missing his monitor, he immediately suggest that they play “Buggers and Astronauts”, a game where Peter torments Ender endlessly. Valentine confronted him when Peter starts suffocating Ender. She threatened to tell on him and that no matter what he does, people will find out about what he did and he will get in trouble. Ender retells his situation with Stilson in an attempt to look tough. Later on that night, Peter crawled down to Ender’s bunk bed and hugged him telling him that he loved him and that he understands his pain. Once Peter fell asleep, Ender cried for the second time that day.
Chapter Three:
In Chapter Three, the morning after Ender’s monitor was removed, he sat at the table with his family but he didn’t eat due to his mood. The vague voices that were having conversation with each other starts to plot a plan in order to persuade Ender to leave his family. A knock on the door interrupts the family’s breakfast and Colonel Hyrum Graff came personally to invited Ender to join the Battle School in the Belt. Graff and Ender talk in private and he successfully reassure Ender of everything he was afraid of and asked for his justification on why he had beat the “Stilson kid up”. When Ender explained to him what had happened, Graff told him that it was a reasonable excuse because he was just trying to protect himself. Although Ender was afraid of what the future might hold, he bravely agreed to go with Graff. When their discussion was officially over, they went to tell his family. They were all teary and upset due to the fact that they thought they could have Ender back again and that he didn’t have to fight off the Buggers. They share goodbyes and Ender left for his new life.
