Chapter Four:
Previously, in Chapter Three, Ender left his family to join the Battle School with Graff. The setting of this chapter takes place on the Launch ship where Ender meets other student/recruits of the schools. Each of them are exceptionally gifted and geniuses. As the new characters are introduced, Ender meets another Antagonist, Bernard. Bernard was tormenting Ender so he lashed out in defense and caused Bernard to break his arm, an effect that he caused himself for being a bully. Graff had put unnecessary attention on Ender so that the other kids would be jealous of him/exclude him. Graff wanted Ender to learn the definition of independence and that he would have to fend for himself in order to save mankind. Although Graff only wanted the best for Ender, Ender felt betrayed because he thought Graff was his friend.
Chapter Five:
The boys in the launch have finally arrived at the Battle School in Space for their training. There he chose his bed and set up a “security system of his own”. It is clear now that the new antagonist in Ender’s life would be Bernard and his crew. They continue to torment Ender for the remaining of the chapter. During the first night there, every single recruit cried or called out for their parents, except Ender. He had built a tougher skin around himself due to Peter’s endless teasing. He had cried without tears and toughed up because he did not want to appear weak. Later on in the chapter, when Ender was fed up with Bernard tactics and bullying, he decided to send a message that said “Cover your butt, Bernard is watching” –God which caused all the other children to laugh at him. This continued on and soon, Bernard’s attempt to be ruler of the room was broken when the voice of authority jolted the other kids out of their childishness. The next day, Ender became friends with Shen, and suddenly Battle School isn’t as dreary as Ender thought it would be.
Chapter Six:
As Ender gets used to Battle School, he is introduced to the “Battle Room”. They newbies were all put into suits and soon Ender found a way to maneuver in the space outfit. He had figured it out quickly and soon, Bernard’s best friend Alai did too. They messed around with all the possibilities that they could do. Subsequently, Bernard followed what they were doing and the three boys enjoyed themselves and immersed themselves in what is going to be their future lifestyle. Together, the three boys formed an alliance against the other members and begin “taking them out”. Ender realizes that they could all be friends through Alai, the bridge of the friendship. After the Battle Room situation, Ender sat down and played a video game called “Free Play”. At first he was extremely frustrated because he kept on dying, then he killed the giant in the game by ripping out his eyeball. When he went into the Giant, he had beat the “unbeatable game” and was now in Fairyland. Instead of feeling ecstatic that he had ascended to the next level, he signed off the game due to his guilt. His morals were telling him that it isn’t okay to kill someone, to be a murderer, even if it is just inside a game. He thinks of Peter when he thought this and how “proud of him” Peter would be.
